Topic 01

Tijelo: The body

A topic lesson is an easier lesson: no new grammar, but lots of new words. In this topic you learn the parts of the tijelo (body). You also review gender from lesson 2: look at the last letter, and the gender is shown with every word (m, ž, s).

Gender:mmuški rod(masculine)žženski rod(feminine)ssrednji rod(neuter)pl.množina(plural only)

The head

  • glavažheadglah-vah
  • kosažhairkoh-sah
  • licesfacelee-tseh
  • okoseyeoh-koh
  • uhosearoo-hoh
  • nosmnosenohs
  • ustapl.mouthoo-stah
  • zubmtoothzoob
  • vratmneckvraht

The body

  • ramesshoulderrah-meh
  • rukažarm, handroo-kah
  • lakatmelbowlah-kaht
  • prstmfingerprst (the r is the vowel)
  • trbuhmbellytr-booh
  • leđapl.backleh-jah (soft dj)
  • nogažleg, footnoh-gah
  • koljenoskneekol-yeh-noh
  • stopalosfoot (sole)stoh-pah-loh
  • srcesheartsr-tseh
  • tijelosbodytee-yeh-loh

Watch out: usta and leđa

usta (mouth) and leđa (back) only exist in the plural, like the English “scissors”. They end in -a, but they are not feminine.

Does something hurt? Boli me…

Say Boli me + the body part. Literally it is “it hurts me, the head”. You can also turn it around: Glava me boli.

  • Boli me glava.I have a headache.
  • Boli me trbuh.I have a stomach ache.
  • Boli me zub.I have toothache.
  • Boli me noga.My leg / foot hurts.

Ovo, to and ono

With ovo, to and ono from lesson 3 you point at body parts: ovo is near you, to near the other person.

  • Ovo je ruka. This is a hand. (your own hand)
  • To je nos. That is a nose. (the other person's)
  • Što je to? To je uho. What is that? That is an ear.
Did you know?

ruka is both your arm and your hand, and noga both your leg and your foot. To be precise, a hand is šaka and a foot stopalo, but in daily life you mostly hear ruka and noga.

Finished this lesson? Tick it off and it will show up in your progress (you need an account for that).
